Fire DowntownCity fire officials are warning building owners and contractors about the elevated risks with rooftop fires.

This after a recent fire downtown.

Fire Chief Grant Love says no one was injured but residents were displaced from their home.

He says there are potential hazards with “hot work” activities like welding and cutting along with the use of torches on a rooftop.

Love points to an incident in North Perth a few years ago.

Two firefighters lost their lives fighting such a fire when the roof they were on collapsed.

He says there are different precautions and steps that need to be taken with hot work on roof tops.

One includes a fire watch to be done, where a person checks the work area for fire, every hour and continues to do so up to three hours after the work is complete.

Another involves protecting combustible material against sparks or flames when within five metres of a hot application.
