buses

City Police have received complaints on a couple of fronts.

First, reports of motorists failing to stop for a school bus.

Police remind motorists they must stop for a stopped school bus in both directions when its upper red lights are flashing.

You must also allow for a safe distance when approaching the bus from the front so children can get on and off and don’t move until the red lights have stopped flashing and the bus is moving.

That’s when the road does not have a median.

When it does, traffic coming from the opposite direction is not required to stop.

Fines for not following the law can range from 400 Dollars to Two Thousand Dollars and six demerit points for a 1st offense to a Thousand Dollars to Four Thousand Dollars and six demerit points and even jail time for additional offenses.

As well, motorists and cyclists must stop until crossing guards, children and all pedestrians have completely crossed the road.
