LAURIE SCOTT

The PC Critic for Women’s Issues is looking for government support of her private members bill on Human Trafficking. Laurie Scott has called the bill  The Saving The Girl Next Door Act and she says it seeks to combat this modern day slavery.

She says it calls for a task force in which there will be coordination of police forces, crown attorneys and victim services in terms of training but more as well including resources to provide security for the victims so they can get out of the trade.

Scott  says the bill includes 3 parts including having a day of awareness of human trafficking, expanding current legislation so a protection order would force the perpetrator to stay away from the victim for a minimum of 3 years and a new civil action would be created for the victim to sue the trafficker.

Scott says the bill has passed 2nd reading and is currently stuck in committee.

Local police officials says this isn’t a big city issue as human trafficking happens everywhere including the North Bay area.
