There’s an organization in the north that is dedicated to children with cancer.

It’s called Northern Ontario Families of Children With Cancer.

It’s Executive Director Dayna Caruso is making presentations around the north letting municipalities know about them.

She was in North Bay at the last council meeting as this month is childhood cancer awareness month.

She says they are based in Sudbury but currently deal with 17 families in Nipissing District.

Caruso says they offer up to 20 services including reimbursement for taxis and accommodations a well as Per Diems for every day a family stays away for treatment.

She says they are not government funded and depend on community contributions.

Caruso says children dealing with cancer is more common than you might think as 1 in 285 children will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 20.

She says they help 200 families in the north every year.
