Riley Bruce has been named captain of the North Bay Battalion.

Coach Stan Butler says Bruce is a leader on and off the ice.

He says the Calgary Flames draft pick plays the game with a lot of common sense, is a university level student and is a great role model for some of the younger players.

Bruce was an assistant captain last year and Butler says the promotion to captain is a natural progression.

Brett McKenzie, Zach Shankar and Cam Dineen were named assistants.

Butler says many of the team’s players away at NHL camps aren’t expected for the home opener on Friday against Niagara.

That list includes Bruce, Dineen and McKenzie.
