The Crime Severity Index is out for 2015 and North Bay went up and down.

Most of the news is good.

The index overall was 61.48 which is 4.7 per cent better than last year when it was 64.52.

In terms of violent crime, North Bay’s index is 13 per cent better than a year ago but non violent crime showed a slight increase of .3 per cent.

Officials are pleased overall but they’re tempering that with efforts to something about a report in Maclean’s Magazine that pegged North Bay as the fifth worst rated city in the country when it comes to being sexually assaulted.

Deputy Chief Scott Tod says they’ve applied for funding to address this problem.

He wants to work with Nipissing University and the Crown Attorney‘s office to find common solutions to the issue.

He says their policies must be modern and up to date in response to what the needs of the victims, their families and the community are.

He says Chief Shawn Devine and the Police Services Board have been very active in this area.

Overall, North Bay’s Crime Severity Index is 138th out of 311 communities in the country.
