We’ve told you before about Anita Spalding.

She has served the Canadian Cancer Society for over 50 years and last year she was honoured by the cancer society for her dedication.

Monday night at city council she was honoured for receiving the Governor Generals Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers.

She says she began her volunteering by going door to door and raising awareness on the cancer society and what it does.

Later, she developed breast cancer and beat it and that fact means a lot to patients she deals with today.

Spalding says many patients depend on her for support.

She says she has survived cancer and that means a lot to someone fighting it.

Spalding encourages people to get checked especially older men who she says should undergo a prostate exam.
