The province made an important important announcement for child care funding in Nipissing on Thursday.

The Minister Responsible for Early Years and Child Care announced she was upping the child care funding in the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board by just over 10 %.

Indira Naidoo Harris says the announcement will make child care more affordable for 140 additional children aged 0-4 in the region.

She also spoke at the annual general meeting of the Northern Ontario Service Delivers Association or NOSDA.

Chair Iain Angus gives the province good grades for recent action including the move to universal accessible child care, changes to EMS and more affordable housing.

Angus points out the provincial act governing DSAAB’s hasn’t changed in 17 years and it’s time for action.

He says right now they’re working through potential solutions and they’ll be proposed to the government.

Angus says the key issue is how municipalities are billed and if there should be changes.

Angus says most communities use weighted assessment but there is another formula out there.

He says the solution must be a fair one for all communities.
