A Texas sheriff says there was likely “no way” for parishioners to escape once shooting started at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs.
Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt Jr. says the gunman, wearing black tactical-style gear and armed with an assault rifle, fired several shots outside before entering the church and walking toward the front of the congregation.
He says the shooter then turned and opened fire on his way back out the front door.
Twenty-six people — ranging in age from five to 72 — were killed and 20 others were injured.
Outside, a civilian with a rifle confronted the suspected shooter — 26-year-old Devin Kelley — and chased him away.
Kelley was later found dead in his vehicle.
The U-S Air Force says Kelley was court-martialed in 2012 for domestic violence and was discharged two years later. (1)
