There have been five fires in North Bay since last Saturday.

The latest came Monday afternoon just before 5 pm, at the corner of McIntyre and Regina.

Fire Chief Jason Whiteley says it occurred in the 3rd floor of an old home being converted into an apartment-rooming house.

He says when they arrived smoke was visible.

“Citizens were helping the lower floor occupants get out, crews immediately began an interior attack. They searched all floors. We helped remove 2 dogs from the area. We got the fire under control very quickly,” he says.

Whiteley says the fire at 1 point did extend into the attic area.

“We’re not sure who made the original 911 call. There were a few neighbours who called 911 and there were a couple that helped go into the building and knock on doors on the lower floors that the fire wasn’t to alert some of the people to get them out,” he says.

There were no injuries and no word on cause or damage yet.

As for the other four fires that happened between early Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon, two were chimney fires, both on Sunday, on Ski Club Road and Copeland St.

Another fire Sunday was on Princess Street in a detached garage, involving an ATV.

Officials say the fire started to spread, but they were able to contain it and estimate the damage at $50,000.

The cause is accidental and their investigation is focusing on the battery charger of the All Terrain Vehicle.

The first fire was on McKeown Avenue early on Saturday morning with damage estimated at $100,000.

The blaze occurred in a semi-detached home but there were working smoke alarms and so the residents were able to evacuate before the fire department arrived.

Again, the cause is said to be accidental.
