The issue of city council approving a contract to purchase some vehicles has come up again.

In January, council rejected a recommendation on a request for proposal.

The RFP was for the purchase of 8 half ton crew cab trucks.

The highest score went to a London firm edging out two local companies but that was rejected.

Tuesday night, council supported a contract to purchase 6 vehicles even though the lowest price went to an out of town company and 5 local firms bid on it.

Councillor Jeff Serran says rules are rules and the law’s the law.

“We must follow policies and procedures municipally and what is legislated provincially. We really need to ensure that we don’t set ourselves up for litigation down the road,” he says.

Councillor Derek Shogren wonders why they’re voting on it in the first place.

“The bottom line is why is this coming to us. If it’s a rubber stamp. If city staff is telling us we have to accept this by law. Why is it even coming to us,” he says.
