North Bay leads the province in organ donor registrations.

That’s an update from earlier in the year when North Bay was second to Parry Sound.

Recipients of organs from donors who made a presentation at city council this week say while it’s good North Bay is leading the province at 56 % they still feel the number should be higher.

There are over 1,500 people on the waiting list.

Not on the list yet is Canadore College student Adele Orr.

She suffers from Cystic Fibrosis and will need a transplant at some point.

“When you’re listed you have to drop everything you can’t go to school or work. You have to move away from your family. You have to find an apartment in Toronto. You’re at the hospital three or four times a week for testing and monitoring. You can’t have a life,” she says.

Clair Stewart was on a waiting list for a liver transplant and she says the organ donation she received has made a big difference in her life.

“When I had my transplant I had a newborn grandson that I never held. Since then I’ve had a relationship with him. That would not have happened. I would have never had time with my grandson. So it’s that important,” Stewart says.

The stats say 32 % of Ontarians are registered donors.
