This week is Peace Week and one of the highlights at the North Bay YMCA is the awarding of the peace medals.

Two were handed out this year.

One to nine year old Kyle Samuel for his efforts in attempting to ban plastics including plastic bags from grocery stores.

He’s been involved in raising the issue in the recent federal election campaign and attending rallies on the climate change crisis.

He says his campaign started after designing some posters and spread from there.

“I organized a cleanup at the Staples Parking Lot, I took part in some rallies and spoken to Mayor Al McDonald, MPP Vic Fedeli and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau too,” he says.

Samuel’s mother Emily says her son is sending a positive message about changing things to kids his own age and adults as well.

Also recognized was Lindsay Sullivan.

Lindsay says she always wanted to be a peacemaker with a focus on kindness.

“It doesn’t mean we always agree. It’s important we be kind to each other and be good in this world,” Sullivan says.

She says she’s a social worker by trade and by heart and runs a community choir.
