Snowmobilers are welcoming the frigid temperatures in the forecast, but the snowmobile season is still a ‘long way away’ from starting.

Marketing Director with the North Bay Snowmobile Club, Shawn Flindall, tells BayToday they actually need lengthy stretches of temperatures in the minus 20 to minus 30 range, to freeze everything up.

“It looks good because there’s snow-cover, but all the swamps and water ways are not frozen at all, there’s no frost in the ground to speak of yet,” he says.

Trails are opening to the north, but again Flindall says that’s not the case here yet.

“We’re still a long way away here, there’s still open lakes and minimal ice, and poor ice conditions. We really need to stress here that now is not the time to take any chances,” he tells BayToday.

The forecast over the next few days may help their cause.

The temperature is expected to drop to minus 20 tomorrow (Wednesday), with Thursday’s daytime high minus 19.
