Sturgeon Falls is a small town located 5 km up the Sturgeon River from Lake Nipissing and is now the administrative centre for the provincially mandated town of West Nipissing (incorporated in 1990).

The townsite was known to European fur traders back in the 17th century, but really began their growth with the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1882, which brought a lot of workers in the lumber and pulp industry (1884). The town’s paper mill was the centre of local life for more than a century! The decline of the mill came gradually, but when residents caught word of this decline, they rallied to save it.  With the generous support of the Ontario government, and a million dollars raised locally, the mill was converted to produce 100% recycled paper. Unfortunately, the mill eventually closed when bought by new owners and was demolished in 2004.

Sturgeon Falls is known in Northern Ontario for their four seasons of vacationing fun, and a multitude of other reasons for the traveler to point their compass to this area of Ontario. They offer fun activities such as snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, spending time at the cottage or visiting their famous chip stands. Sturgeon Falls is one of those “hidden gems” that’s closer than you think! If you’re looking for a day trip, there’s lots to see right in your own backyard. For more details click HERE.
