The city is defending its decision to not allow the use of so called fake snow on movie sets.

Chief Administrative Officer Keith Robicheau says the city strives to balance economic development and environmental protection priorities and the decision to ban PHOS-CHEK was made after a careful review of the potential impact.

He says no film permits have been withdrawn and they’ve received no indication that their decision could impact projects in the works.

Robicheau says snow can still be simulated in other ways.

Meantime, an online petition has been started asking the city to reconsider a ban.

As of early Monday, the petition has nearly 600 supporters.

One city councillor has reached out to staff to learn more about the ban.

Mike Anthony says it’s important that a solution and a compromise can be found.

Anthony points out the film industry pumped $8.9 million into the local economy in 2016.

That jumped to $22.7 million last year.
