Strong words from North Bay Police Services Board chair Dennis O’Connor at this months board meeting.

O’Connor says many members of the public are upset with board members and the chief that officers charged with serious crimes are still getting paid even though they’ve been suspended.

He says they would love to stop this practice but the Police Service Act gives them no powers to do that.

O’Connor  says the province has indicated a willingness to open up the act but if people want to change the current situation he suggests they write to the province and call for no pay for suspended officers who have been charged with a serious crime.

O’Connor says there’s also an impact to the boards bottom line because they’re suspending officers and paying them meaning the officers aren’t working and that has an impact of duties being performed throughout the service.

He says they’re already spending near half a Million Dollars paying officers while suspended.
