Several recent events are proving the next generation of North Bay Titans swimmers are looking strong.

Fifteen year old Jenna Wall set three club records at the Ontario Junior International swim meet this past weekend at the Pan Am Centre in Toronto.

She now owns all three Titans records in 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke, which team officials say was not an easy task.

Division one swimmer Jen Leckie held the records for the last ten years.

“It was a gutsy performance from Jenna,” says Titans head coach John Mcleod.  “She missed a week of training for a family trip and had a tough time getting back in the water, but she made a choice to do her best and use this opportunity.  The results speak for themselves.”

Wall was also one of the youngest competitors in her finals.

The event brought in the best 18 and under swimmers from across Canada, along with teams from Great Britain, Japan and the United States.

Wall has already qualified to compete at the Olympic Trials (April 2020), which are also being held at the Pan Am Centre in Toronto.

Earlier this month the North Bay Titans hosted the second Northeast Region Development Meet of the season at the YMCA Pool (Dec. 7/8).

The event was held a week after the team competed in Montreal.

“I’m really impressed that half the team did two major meets, back-to-back, and performed well,” says Mcleod.  “This was a really good tune-up for our regional meet coming up in January in Sault Ste Marie.”

He says the team is looking really strong.

Twenty-two athletes are now qualified for the Regional Championship.

“We have several strong relays and they swam well at our home meet.   We now have to continue this performance on the big stage.”

Several athletes did two 400m events, back-to-back, at the local meet including Indiana Coffin and Marlee Parker.

“The athletes are reinforcing my philosophy of racing all the events, and various distances.  I’m very impressed by the buy-in from the athletes,” Mcleod says.

In mid-November, eleven Titans competed at first Top Fish meet of the season in Sudbury.

The event is for swimmers 12 and under.

“It was the first ever competition for half of our swimmers at the event and I was most impressed with the ability of all them to race multiple strokes and achieve a legal time,” says Mcleod.

Five different Titans had a first place finish or ranking.

Coming up in the new year the North Bay Titans are starting a Masters group of 18 and older swimmers, coached by Mcleod.

It’ll be the first Masters group for North Bay in several years.

“I’m part of the Swim Ontario Masters Committee and I’m really proud to help promote masters swimming in the north,” Mcleod says.
