City Council is calling on the federal government to recognize small family run campgrounds as small businesses.

A motion was brought forward by Councillor Mike Anthony, who says some campgrounds are being assessed by Revenue Canada at triple the rate because they’re not recognized as small businesses.

He wants the high assessments suspended and not impact the real campground owner.

Councillor Chris Mayne says he gets the point in the motion, but wants fairness too.

He says there are examples of trailer park owners paying 44 per cent tax when the campground owner next door, who relies mostly on long term tenants not the usual summer camper, is paying a third of that.

The motion was passed and sent to MP Anthony Rota, the Prime Minister and the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities among others.
