This past Sunday saw the start of a fisheries assessment of Lake Nipissing by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, in partnership with Nipissing First Nation and Dokis First Nation.

Karen Passmore is the ministry’s regional outreach specialist.

She says they’re undertaking research on Lake Nipissing for a 19th straight year.

It’s called Fall Walleye Index Netting.

She says they are assessing species on the lake, like walleye and yellow perch.

The three week research is meant to guide management decisions for the fish population on the lake and looks at a lot of things including age, length, weight and sex of the fish.

Passmore says there are 48 nets overall and asks the public to not tamper with the nets.

Once complete, information will be available at the ministry’s web site.

No word on when that will be.
