There are a few blood donor clinics in North Bay this week.

Canadian Blood Services spokesperson Joanne Drake says this weeks clinics are tomorrow from noon to 730 and Wednesday from 1130 to 7 at the Best Western.

She says they have a lot of appointments booked but the proof is in the pudding meaning that people who have booked appointments show up for them.

She says their goal is to collect 115 units a day at this weeks clinics.

She says they’re always looking for blood donors.

Drake says they need 100 Thousand new donors every year to keep up with hospital demand and about 40 per cent of the donor base leaves so new donors are definitely needed.

Drake says the blood people are scheduled to donate goes directly to patients in hospitals.

She says it takes 5 units a week to support cancer patients, 8 for someone who has leukemia and 15 for a serious car accident victim.

Also, right now, woman must wait 8 weeks between donations but that will be increasing to 12 next month as Canadian Blood Services is changing the guidelines for iron levels in donations.

The guidelines for Male donors will change in March.
