Now that we’ve had a few hours to contemplate Donald Trump being the new US president it’s time to assess what happened last night.

Nipissing University Political Science professor David Tabachnick says it’s not surprising except for 1 major factor.

He says the polls were wrong and that’s the surprising part of the result.

He says keep in mind the Democrats have been in power for 8 years and the elections are always close. He says the opposite happened 8 years ago voters wanted change and they went for the other side going from a Republican president who was leaving office to a Democratic one.

Tabachnick says two issues of importance came during the campaign for Canadian interests: trade and the military relationship.

He says he doesn’t believe NAFTA will get cancelled or NATO will disappear but here could be changes for both with Trump in office now.
