The health unit says a bloom of toxin-producing in blue-green algae has been detected along the south shore of Lake Nipissing in Callander.

Residents are advised not to use the water from the lake for drinking, cooking and bathing if they use a private water system.

As well, boiling the water won’t destroy the toxins.

Don’t swim or perform water sports as that could increase the risk of algae material and toxins contacting your skin.

As well, it’s not advisable for pets or livestock to swim in the water or drink it.

The Health Unit says some toxins do accumulate in fish and shellfish and they don’t know if the toxins accumulated in fish are a concern.

You’re advised to be careful if you eat fish caught in the water and don’t eat the liver, kidneys and other organs of fish caught.

The health unit says the toxins may stay in the water for up to 3 weeks after the bloom has gone.
